Your Everyday Mish-mosh

Your Everyday Mish-mosh

Starting out this project, I brainstormed ideas surrounding what Remix Culture was to me and what my understanding of it was. The biggest foundational interest I found as a part of this project was the juxtaposition of two elements that create contrast within a piece. Throughout my works, I worked around different concepts, as well as mental an visual textures and the ideas surrounding the objects I chose. I also wanted to think about 'mundane' objects as much as I could to create something interesting.

Growing up, I've always been surrounded by art as my father is an artist and always exposed me to different ideas and concepts. One of his favourite concepts and style of art was surrealism and this project reminded me of the beauty of surrealism. Although this project is more about remix culture, it really helped my brain digest the concept and what I was supposed to be thinking about. When I think about surrealism and remix culture, juxtaposition and contrast come to the forefront of my mind. In art, we are constantly looking at different references and techniques in order to make our own contribution to the art world. Our art style is a combination of artists we admire and other things such as media, nature and literature, and to me this is what remix culture is about; taking these ideas and combining them together to produce something that is satisfying but also slightly unsettling to the eye.

Soup Kitchen

This brainstorm was the first idea that came into my head and it all started with the skull. I was looking around my house and saw a multitude of skulls, and thought about what would be an interesting contrast to a skull. My first thought was heels and the relationship they have to women as seen by men in the old days, as stay at home moms who cook in the kitchen, and how skulls aren't normally associated together.

Prickly Air

For this piece, I was really wanting to create something surrounding textures and fragility. I figured that an air balloon with a vase as a base would feel almost dangerous and in order to make it even more thrilling I placed a cactus inside the vase. This creates the mental picture of a cactus that could pop the balloon and cause the balloon to fall and smash the vase.

Brush Brush

Creating an object that is a combination of a texture you can imagine and conceptualize was very fun with this one. The original plan was to create a hair brush with paint brushes as the bristles, however I thought that would be too tame and wanted something more intense. Thus came the pencils, and imagining a brush full of pencils running across your scalp was not very nice and that was what drove me to create this as I wanted it to be unsettling.

The Rocket of Childhood

I started with a rocket in the brainstorm for this piece, and was thinking about childhoods which reminded me of the teachings of safety to children. Often we are taught to not play with fire, so I replaced the fire with legos to demonstrate not only children's imaginations but the joy of playing with a toy safely.

Crunchy

With this piece, I wanted to create something that anyone looking at it could imagine touching. By combining the texture of toast when it comes out of a toaster and socks that have been worn through a full day of walking, I created a gross texture  to imagine. A toasted sock.

Life is Like a Box of Chocolates

Since February is among us, I figured that creating an object with Valentine's Day in mind and the first thing that popped into my head was Forrest Gump's quote. "Life's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get." I took the quote quite literally as I imagined getting a box of chocolates for Valentine's Day and receiving a box of apples instead and how disappointing that would be.

This was an idea that honestly had no concept behind it other than I wanted the handle of the pan to be an obscure object and a boot felt very fitting. I also thought it would be fun if there were boats in the pan.

Sharp and Slippery

This creation started out when I was looking for a trash can, however found this fish cup and I just had to create an object with it. When thinking about fish their main qualities are that they're slippery and soft, and I thought about what would be the polar opposite of a fish, something hard and sharp like a chainsaw. But, the situation of having a fish cup to hold multiple chainsaws was too visually pleasing to not use.

The Key to my Radish

The secret to unlocking the worlds secrets is by sticking a key into a radish and that is how you win in this world. This is the reason why billionaires hold their wealth. I am only disclosing this as the FBI are at my door.

Story Building

I came up with this idea while I was taking a break from school by reading a fantasy book and this idea came flooding through my head. When writing and reading a story, world building is a vital point to immerse the readers into the book to be able to understand what is happening. I also wanted to play on the concept of the story literally coming out of the pages as well.
